How do I join?
The best way is to join us at one of our meetings and see what we are all about. We meet at the Church of the Brethren, on N. Court and Brinton Ave., in Dixon, the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. You can also contact Terry Fuger at advisor@venturecrew85.org with your name and phone number and he will reply to you very quickly.
What is the cost to join?
The cost is $10.00 per year.
How often do you meet?
We meet twice a month 1st & 3rd Tuesday, and then for our activity.
Do you wear a uniform?
The Crew wears a grey polo shirt with a Venture logo on the pocket. They also wear any of the High Adventure activity shirts.
What type of activities does the Venture Crew do?
Venture Crew 85 is geared towards an "Outdoor" theme. Some of the activities we have been active in are Camping (year round), Hiking, Backpacking, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Spelunking (Caving), Snow Skiing, Pro Baseball Games, First Aid/CPR Training, Leadership Conferences and many Community Service projects. We also plan a "High Adventure" trip once a year. We typically have at least one activity a month.
Who decides what activities the Crew does?
That is entirely up to the crew. The advisors are there to act as guides and mentors, and make sure that the activity is not harmful or dangerous.
What do you do for High Adventure trips and how much do they cost?
High Adventure trips are planned by the Venturers. Consequently they work very hard to plan an activity that is exciting and as least expensive as possible. The last 3 years our trips and their costs are listed below. The cost of each trip includes all meals from departure to return, activity shirt, film developing and a hotel stay on the return trip.
- Canoeing -- 1 week - Boundary Waters, MN. 2002 = $325.00
- Backpacking -- 1 week - Appalachian Trail, VA. 2003 = $212.00
- Mountain Biking -- 1 week - Adirondack Mountains, N.Y. 2004 = $237.00
- Backpacking & Whitewater Rafting -- 2 weeks - San De Cristo Mtns. N.M. 2005 = $760.00
- Canoeing -- 1 week - Boundary Waters, MN 2006 = $315.00
Does the Crew fund raise to reduce the costs?
Yes. The Crew participates in popcorn sales, Christmas wreath sales and canoe rentals.
Is fundraising a requirement?
No. Fund raising is voluntary. We try to pick group and/or easy types of fund raisers. Fund raising can help pay for a lot of activities and High Adventure trips, plus it helps the crew pay for supplies so we don't need to charge more for activities.
What if I can't make all the meetings and outings?
Many crew members are active in other areas such as sports, music, theater, and clubs throughout the year. You can participate as much as you are able to with your schedule.
Do I need my own camping equipment?
You need your own personal gear such as a sleeping bag, eating utensils, clothing and flashlight. When you first join the crew you can borrow most items, if needed.
